The starting of Nirmala Sadan for the mentally retarded children was a new step in the social service field of Vimala Province, Kothamangalam. It was started at Karakunnam Parish building on 24th September 1985. For more convenience, in the same year itself we started constructing a new building in the plot donated by His Excellency Mar. George Punnakokkottil under the leadership of the Provincial Superior Rev. Sr. Grace Mary. By the completion of the new building we shifted the school to Muvattupuzha and it was blessed on 14th June 1987 by the Bishop. Rev. Sr. Anto and Rev. Sr. Glory were the pioneers in this field. Rev. Sr. Joviet, the Provincial Superior sent these sisters to U.S.A. to get proper training. Our sisters working in U.S.A. tried to get scholarships for their studies and found benefactors for the financial help for this institution. In addition to this, more financial support was rendered for this Centre by MISERIOR, Germany. The growth of Nirmala Sadan was very rapid. Additional buildings were constructed for Early Intervention programme and Hostel. About 320 children are getting training here. The Management could secure a yearly grant from the Social Justice & Empowerment, New Delhi.
Now Nirmala Sadan is a well-known institution in the training of mentally challenged children. Courses like D.S.E, B.Ed, M.Ed for special Education is conducting here. A family Counseling centre is also functioning here.
